About the category

The Green Infrastructure Policy Award recognises excellence in public and private policies and programmes that have successfully supported the development and implementation of urban green infrastructure.

Nominations may include public and/or private policy and/or programme aimed at supporting the development and/or implementation of urban green infrastructure at the level of individual buildings or at the neighbourhood scale.

A non-exhaustive list of  examples of eligible public and private policies and programmes supporting urban green infrastructures includes:

  • Financing mechanisms and incentive schemes (e.g. grants, subsidies, tax incentives, green bonds)
  • Regulatory and planning policies that promote or mandate green infrastructure
  • Knowledge-sharing initiatives, education and training programmes, and skills-development activities
  • Public awareness and community engagement programmes
  • Technical guidance, standards, and certification schemes
  • Support for pilot and demonstration projects
  • Programmes fostering innovation, research, and development
  • Public–private partnerships and collaborative delivery models
  • Maintenance and monitoring programmes
  • Data, mapping, and decision-support tools for planning and implementation

Nominations may be submitted by:

  • Public Administrations
  • Private sector Entities
  • Non-governmental organisations (NGOs)
  • Academic and Research Institutions
  • Citizens

Nominations will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Degree of innovation
The extent to which the policy or programme demonstrates originality, creativity, or a novel approach to advancing urban green infrastructure, including the introduction of new tools, methods, governance models, or financing mechanisms.

Scope and scale of impact

The significance of the policy’s or programme’s impact on the market, communities, and the wider environment, including its tangible contributions to the development and implementation of urban green infrastructure. Nominations are encouraged to provide measurable evidence of impact, such as:

  • Area of green infrastructure installed (e.g., m² of green roofs, walls, or public green spaces)
  • Volume of stormwater managed, retained, detained (e.g., m³)
  • Biodiversity gains (e.g., increase in pollinator populations or other indicator species)
  • Energy saved or efficiency gains in buildings or neighbourhoods
  • Improved access to green spaces, particularly for disadvantaged or underserved communities
  • Health and well-being benefits, including reductions in noise pollution, improved air quality, or demonstrable mental health outcomes.

Not all impact dimensions need to be met; nominations may demonstrate strength in one or more of these areas. Where possible, evidence of outcomes - such as monitoring data, studies, or evaluations - should be provided. Consideration will also be given to the transferability and replicability of the policy or programme in other contexts

Leadership and sustained commitment
The length of time and consistency of the policy or programme to assess continued commitment to urban green infrastructure deployment.
